Traveling from Nevada to California puts you through the White Mountains either at Montgomery or Westgard Pass, both a smidge higher than 7,000 feet. The drive between Dyer and Tonopah has a ~1,000 foot elevation change but it is much more gradual.

Highway 6 is regularly maintained including in winter. Highway 168 has small sections where traffic becomes single lane: bringing any vehicle through it can be dangerous, much more so for heavy vehicles or in icy conditions.
